Background of the Study
Traditional leadership in Ukwa West Local Government Area, Abia State, plays a pivotal role in resolving economic disputes within local communities. These traditional institutions, which operate alongside modern legal systems, provide culturally resonant mechanisms for conflict resolution, particularly in economic transactions and land disputes (Ndukwe, 2023). Traditional leaders are often regarded as custodians of communal values and mediators who ensure social harmony and economic justice. Their dispute resolution methods, based on customary law and consensus-building, have been instrumental in maintaining local stability and trust among community members (Okoro, 2024). However, challenges such as encroachment by modern legal practices, inter-generational differences, and evolving economic relations have impacted the effectiveness of traditional conflict resolution. Recent studies indicate that revitalizing traditional leadership roles can enhance community-based dispute resolution and foster socio-economic development (Uche, 2025). This study investigates the extent to which traditional leadership contributes to economic dispute resolution and examines factors influencing its efficacy in Ukwa West.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the longstanding role of traditional leadership in economic dispute resolution in Ukwa West, emerging socio-economic changes have strained these mechanisms. Conflicts over land, trade, and resource distribution are increasingly complex, and traditional leaders often face challenges in adapting their practices to modern economic realities (Eke, 2024). The erosion of customary authority and the influence of formal legal systems further complicate dispute resolution, leaving many community members dissatisfied. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of traditional leadership in resolving economic disputes and to identify the challenges that undermine its role.
Objectives of the Study:
• To assess the effectiveness of traditional leadership in resolving economic disputes.
• To identify challenges faced by traditional leaders in adapting dispute resolution methods.
• To recommend strategies for strengthening traditional dispute resolution systems.
Research Questions:
• How effective is traditional leadership in resolving economic disputes in Ukwa West?
• What challenges hinder the traditional dispute resolution process?
• What measures can enhance the capacity of traditional leaders in conflict resolution?
Research Hypotheses:
• H1: Traditional leadership significantly contributes to effective economic dispute resolution.
• H2: Modern legal influences negatively affect traditional conflict resolution methods.
• H3: Strengthening traditional practices improves community satisfaction with dispute resolution.
Significance of the Study
This study is important for understanding the impact of traditional leadership on economic dispute resolution in Ukwa West. Its findings will inform initiatives to strengthen community-based conflict management systems, ensuring more effective and culturally relevant dispute resolution processes (Chukwu, 2023; Onwuegbuzie, 2025). The study’s recommendations are expected to enhance social cohesion and economic justice in local communities.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the role of traditional leadership in economic dispute resolution in Ukwa West Local Government Area, Abia State. It focuses exclusively on traditional conflict resolution mechanisms and excludes formal legal processes. Data are drawn solely from local community sources.
Definitions of Terms:
• Traditional Leadership: Indigenous governance structures based on customary authority.
• Economic Dispute Resolution: Processes for resolving conflicts arising from economic transactions.
